In 1987 six women living in the St. Margaret's Bay area had an idea. Their idea was a toy library, a place where families could come together to share resources in a relaxed and informal setting.

Thanks to the efforts of these women and others who joined them during the next year, the St. Margaret's Bay Toy Library was formed. Although its main purpose is to lend toys, the puppets, drums and building blocks have proved to be only a small part of what the toy library is all about. It is also a place where children learn to play together, to share and cooperate. For parents, especially mothers, it is a place to discuss problems, share ideas on childrearing, and enjoy an hour or two of coffee and conversation.
