Recipes from MJ and Anne
This recipe for homemade play dough is worth repeating. Set your stovetop burner to medium heat. Mix in a large saucepan over the preheated burner:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
Once mixed, add 1 cup boiling water and 1 rounded tablespoon of cream of tartar. You can also add your food colouring at this time, or MJ suggested a package of Kool-Aid for a more vibrant colour. The recipe calls for cooking over medium heat for five minutes, but you may find it's ready in just 2-3 minutes. Turn out onto wax paper (I prefer a wooden board) and knead when cool enough to touch. Keep in an airtight container.
PS: You're going to need a large saucepan just to give you the stirring room - it's quite goopy to mix. Also, if you use Kool-Aid for colour like I did, make sure that your littlest ones don't try to eat it. It will smell quite edible for a couple of weeks before the dough dries out enough to mute the smell.
