Sonya has demonstrated many fine abilities during her first term in Primary. She is a capable student who is attentive to her work and completes all tasks in the time allowed. Although Sonya has adjusted well to her surroundings and seems comfortable with teachers and classmates, she has not yet attempted any verbal communication with anyone. I will continue to strongly encourage her to speak as I feel it is very important to her development. Sonya usually follows verbal directions correctly without the help of visual clues which leads me to believe that her English comprehension is very good. She tends to be a perfectionist and perhaps does not attempt to speak because she is fearful of making a mistake. Teachers and students will continue to provide a comfortable environment where she will hopefully begin to experiment with the English language. An area in which Sonya expresses herself beatifully is her artwork. She is very creative and demonstrates artistic abilities beyond that of a child of her age. Her imaginative thoughts produce well developed and extremely detailed drawings. Sonya is also able to produce elaborate patterns using various concrete materials. Her printing and cutting skills are well advanced. ESL (English Second Language) classes have provided Sonya with a great deal of support this term. We look forward to the many new skills she will demonstrate to us in the coming months.

Отдельно свое мнение высказал учитель ESL:

On task-based activities Sonya has demonstrated her comprehension of basic classroom vocabulary and commands, colours, shapes, body parts, clothing, and letter names. Sonya has good reading readiness skills. She recognizes all upper and lower case letters and can match some sounds and letters. She also recognizes a few sight words. Sonya is very observant and works well on most demonstrated tasks. She is an excellent artist.

Sonya is reluctant to speak. This is a language-learning strategy that some children use. Sonya appears to want to do things well: she does not like to make mistakes. I believe it is due to this that she refuses to try to speak the new language. Sonya needs to know that good language learners sometimes make mistakes. Now that she understands much of the English she hears, she should be ready to speak the language. I will try new strategies to motivate Sonya to speak out loud in the second term.

Sonya has made important adjustments this term to a new home, a new school, a new language, and a new culture. Now we are waiting to hear whar she has to say!

Наконец, учительница музыки была кратка:

Sonya is a very pleasant student but she is still shy about participating in class activities. I expect this to improve this term.

типичное задание Прошел год. 29 июня Соня в последний раз в этом году пошла в школу. Да, учебный год тут на месяц длиннее; правда, в последние две недели учебы как таковой почти не было — то всем классом в бассейн поедут, то пикник перед школой устроят, то ярмарку. А на прощание мы опять получили отчеты наших учителей:

Sonya has continued to progress but unfortunately remained non-verbal during second term. She has come to enjoy the company of her classmates and demonstrates more social behavior. Sonya's writing is very conventional and well presented with appropriate use of upper and lower case letters and punctuation. She writes simple sentences using only words she knows are 'right' with no attempt at experimentation. I encourage her to take more risks when writing and use her knowledge of letter sounds to try an unknown word. Sonya is very cooperative and is attentive to all class activities and discussions. She takes direction well and appears to comprehend all instructions. All tasks were completed nearly and accurately in the time allowed. Sonya continues to display advanced creative abilities. She expresses herself through her artwork but rarely shares her drawings with other. Sonya was able to complete math assignments with ease and had no difficulty with concepts presented this term. Verbal communication should remain a high priority for Sonya as it would greatly enhance her development. She possesses many fine abilities that she will carry into grade one. It has been a wonderful experience to work with her this year.

Sonya is very observant and listens well. She has demonstrated her growing comprehension of English by completing all ESL task-based activities. Sonya is a good artist, and takes pride in her written work. She worked hard to complete both her alphabet journal and her book, The Ghost.

Sonya has excellent reading readiness skills. She has demonstrated her knowledge of letter sounds by completing matching activities. She is able to recognize some early sight words in English, and she can also write a few words when dictated to her.

Sonya never spoke in the ESL classroom or regular classroom this year. I tried various strategies to encourage her to speak, but none of these strategies worked! Sonya has demonstrated in many other ways that she has acquired receptive English. It is her expressive language that I was not able to assess. Sonya missed out on many enjoyable experiences this year because she chose not to talk.

Grade One.

Sonya has chosen the exact path that she set out for herself during her entire stay in the Grade One program where she has not uttered a single sound in the classroom. I am hopeful that one day Sonya will choose to fill in the missing piece that will allow her to express herself in ways that go beyond pictures and print. That is not to say that Sonya is not a complete person, however as her teacher I would want her to be 'all that she can be' to borrow a cliche. I want to emphasize once again Sonya's gift as an illustrator. Her drawings are 'works of art' in my eyes!

Sonya's Journal has been the key whereby I have been allowed to hear her voice. As the year unfolded we 'conversed' very freely. I naturally looked forward to reading her Journal as well as responding to her entries. At times Sonya wrote questions directly to me. I did not have to read between the lines to detect Sonya's confidence in her written voice. At one point she wrote that she would need a new Journal by June (although she had recently started a new one but she was right). Sonya also declared that she felt to be a very fast writer. Sonya was able to focus on her writing during an entire twenty-minute session with ease. The writing itself was amazing in terms of the degree to which Sonya accurately spelled a large portion of the words. The fact that she read my writing in her Journal without assistance gave me a hint of her skill as a reader. I offered her books throughout the year, as part of our Guided Reading program, however she never agreed to read any out loud to me. She did not indicate that she was having any difficulty with words when asked. In her free time Sonya spent time with books that were suitable for a very strong early reader, such as those from our Arthur collection.

Sonya's participation in the Math program was equally amazing. She often went about a task independently. The speed and accuracy of recording addition and subtraction facts for example indicated that she has a very strong grasp of 'abstract operations' (we have worked with quantities no greater than ten, however Sonya did sometimes choose to go beyond 10 as far as 20). She excelled with the work that we did involving numbers from 1 to 100 as well. Sonya has an excellent understanding of the number line, skip counting and ten/ones. She completed her work related to pattering, shapes/solids, as well as some measurement without any hesitation.

Grade Two.

Sonya is a kind and thoughtful girl who is doing well in all areas of the grade two program. Her language skills are developing nicely. Sonya is in the transitional stage of reading. She is fluent reader who reads grade level material with ease and comfort. She has all the reading strategies in place to be a successful reader. She looks at picture cues, sentence context, and sounds out unfamilar words. She pays close attention to the print, looking at the beginning, middle, and ending of the word. Sonya needs little support in her reading as she is such a strong, indepentent reader. Occasionally, she will need help in sounding out a person's name in a story. Sonya is now reading chapter books in class. She enjoys reading The Magic Tree House book series. Sonya has participated very well in our home reading program. She has read a few mystery chapter books. Sonya has excellent writing skills. From the beginning of the year, Sonya has shown keen interest in all writing activities. She writes in detail and uses very descriptive language and has a nice sense of story. Her sentence structure and spelling skills are excellent. Sonya prints very neatly and organizes her page well. Sonya's artwork is lovely! She sketches in detail and enjoys coloring her pictures. Sonya enjoyed participating in our class play, «A Flea On Santa's Tree?». She did a great job in her role as the Queen and had fun performing to an audience. Well done, Sonya!

Sonya has an excellent understanding of the math learning outcomes. She enjoys all math activities and likes to be challenged. She can quickly add and substract facts to 18, read and use the monthly calendar, and model two and three digit numbers in a variety of ways. Her scribbler work is neatly organized. Sonya has a solid understanding of graphing, using ordinal numbers, seeing number patters, and problem solving. In January, we have worked on a geometry unit. Sonya can recognize and name such shapes such as parallelograms, rhombi, trapezoids, pentagons and hexagons. She likes using the pattern blocks to explore these shapes and enjoys working in small groups.

Sonya is a good participant in the content areas. She enjoys learning new vocabulary and concepts. She needs some encouragement to express her ideas as she is a very quiet student. Sonya is very respectful of other students' opinions. Our discussions and activities in Science, Health and Social Studies have been about communities, December celebrations around the world, fire prevention, bus safety, winter safety, and motion. Sonya has demonstrated her knowledge of position and motion. She has had the opportunity to explore and make predictions about how various factors effect the movement of an object. In class, she has designed her own moving objects such as box cars, sailboats, and paper gliders. I very much appreciate how Sonya will stop what she is doing and listen very carefully while I give directions to the class. She is an excellent listener and a most cooperative student. It has been such a pleasure teaching Sonya this term. She has a wonderful attitude towards learning and school.
